Oxford Healthcare workers stand in solidarity with Oxford University community

We, the undersigned healthcare workers in Oxford, stand in solidarity with members of the Oxford University community who have begun an encampment outside the Pitt Rivers museum. We firmly support their demand that the university divest from Israel’s genocide in Gaza, as well as from Israel’s ongoing apartheid regime against Palestinians and its settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

After 6 months of military assault, more than 5479 students, 261 teachers and 95 university professors have been killed in Gaza via relentless airstrikes targeting densely populated residential areas, hospitals, universities, schools, and other critical infrastructure.

All 12 universities in Gaza have been the target of Israeli attacks. As of the 17th of April, 60 percent of educational facilities have been destroyed. Over half a million students in Gaza have no access to education. 

More than 458 healthcare workers are confirmed dead with hundreds more missing, feared dead. Mass graves have been discovered at Nasser Hospital and Al-Shifa Hospitals, with evidence of extrajudicial executions, abductions and torture of staff and patients. 

This deliberate and systematic targeting of healthcare and educational settings by the Israeli forces in Gaza is one of ethnic cleansing aimed at dismantling the very foundations of Palestinian society and ensuring that life cannot be sustained. 

Many of our future colleagues, the medical and healthcare students of Gaza, have been killed in this ongoing genocide. Those remaining have had their education interrupted, and are fighting for their and their families’ survival daily.

We are watching history repeat itself. These attacks on education and health systems cannot be tolerated. Healthcare workers have acted in the past to protest against such grave crimes and to end injustice. In 1984, the British Medical Association (BMA) and the Royal College of Psychiatrists excluded the apartheid regime of South Africa from world professional bodies after a campaign led by Healthcare Against Apartheid. Our voices matter. Our moral obligation is towards humanity and the upholding of humanitarian law. 

We stand with the Palestinian people. We demand an end to UK universities’ funding of and profiting from Israel’s apartheid state furthering Israel’s endless abuse and murder of Palestinians. 

We, as healthcare workers, stand in solidarity with our students to send a clear message that those who target schools, universities and healthcare facilities will be held responsible. We urge Oxford University and other universities across the UK to listen to the students’ demands, to divest from the apartheid regime in Israel and to support the Palestinian-led rebuilding of education in Gaza.
